Our Story & Mission
Serving Woodside with the Gospel
For decades, Woodside Community Church has stood as a beacon of truth and Christian
unity in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the world.
We
We are God’s people, a community of believers united around Jesus Christ. We are a chosen race, a
royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession (1 Pet. 2:9). We are God’s church,
his temple, the bride of Christ, a body, and a family.
Preach
We are a community that exists to proclaim God’s excellencies (1 Pet. 2:9). We do not exist for
ourselves, but for him. We live for him. We all have a role to play in the work of ministry, for
building up the body of Christ (Eph. 4:12). We are all gifted by God and use those gifts for the
common good (1 Cor. 12:7). We exist to make the invisible God visible and we do this primarily by
speaking about him, by spreading the good news of his grace. This grace is revealed in the Bible,
which is God’s Word, breathed out by him and sufficient to make wise for salvation (2 Tim. 3:15-16).
We believe that the Word of God is sufficient for the work of God.
Christ
He is the Messiah, the Son of God (Mark 1:1). He is God who took on flesh and came to us (John 1:14).
He became one of us to rescue us. He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6) and he came that
we might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). He is the image of the invisible God and all
things were created by him, through him, for him, and in him all things hold together (Col. 1:15-17).
Crucified
He came to serve us and save us by giving his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). He is the good
shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep (John 10:11). While we were still sinners, he died for
us. We are justified by his blood and we are reconciled to God by his death (Rom. 5:6-11). He bore our
griefs. He carried our sorrows. He was wounded for our transgressions. He was crushed for our
iniquities. God has laid on him the iniquity of us all and by his wounds we are healed (Isaiah
53:4-7).
Heritage & Foundations
Church History
Today’s Woodside Community Church
began as an effort of several men from different churches around our present area in 1874. They had been
concerned that there was no significant Gospel witness in the Woodside area – an area with far more
“woods” than today. They started a Sunday School in 1874, which eventually began meeting over a
carpenter’s shop near present-day 56th Street and Woodside Avenue. As this religious school grew in
attendance, they added a preaching service and a prayer service. In 1880, they decided to organize into
a local church. The new church continued renting space above the carpenter shop.
In 1885 the church purchased some
lots and built a church building at the corner where Woodside Avenue, Roosevelt Avenue, and 58th Street
meet (the intersection where Little Cheer’s Pizza and the Bagels Plus are today).
Historical View: The original wooden church structure built in 1885 at Woodside Ave,
Roosevelt Ave & 58th Street.
The church building at that site was
a traditional wooden church structure with steep steps rising from walkway to the church’s front door.
In 1887, they officially incorporated as “The First Baptist Church of Woodside, Long Island”. (Queens
did not become its own county until 1889).
When the elevated train was built
along Roosevelt Avenue around 1916, the noise became an almost unbearable hindrance to the worship
services and other activities. So a new location was sought out. The church purchased a swampy piece of
land on what was then Manson Place & Betts Avenue (today's 58th Street & 41st Avenue), and a new
building was completed by 1925. The church changed its name in 1926 to “Woodside Community Church
(Baptist),” emphasizing that it was a church that welcomed all true believers of any Protestant
denomination from the community, but the church would be distinctly Baptist in its theology and
practice.
Today we are a multi-national church committed to the
gospel of Jesus Christ, preaching God’s Word, and reaching others with the Gospel.

Sunday Morning Worship
⏰ Every Sunday at 11:00 AM
Experience congregational worship, corporate prayer, and rich expository preaching centered around the
Gospel of Jesus Christ.
What is a service like?
The whole service is about worship. We worship God through singing, praying, giving, Scripture
reading, and the preaching from the Bible.
What is the style of music?
We are less concerned with style and more concerned with content. We sing a blend of traditional
hymns and contemporary songs that are biblical and gospel-centered. We strive for musical excellence
but our focus is on the congregational singing as we together proclaim the greatness of our God
through song.
What is the typical sermon like?
The sermons are about 50 to 60 minutes as we preach expositionally through books of the Bible. We
believe that the Bible is the very Word of God so we are committed to preaching verse by verse
through his Word. The Bible is explained and then applied in what is hopefully a true, engaging, and
helpful way.
What should I wear?
Come however you feel comfortable. We are a diverse church in about every way, including dress. Some
will be wearing suits and some will be wearing jeans and a t-shirt. You’ll fit in wherever you land
on that spectrum.
